Introducing #SeaToSource

Find Out More

#SeaToSource is an initiative powered by Conservation Volunteers Australia, supporting you to take action on one of the world’s most solvable environmental issues – ocean litter.

We’re committed to reducing the amount of plastic litter entering our creeks, rivers and oceans and causing harm to the animals that call these places home. Plastic is around 60-95% of the litter in our waterways and oceans, and causes a wide range of issues in these environments.

Initially, #SeaToSource will focus on 8 waterways, most of which flow into The Great Southern Reef - a huge series of connected reefs that extend around Australia's coastline, from Moreton Bay, Queensland to Kalbarri in Western Australia. The Great Southern Reef is home to a wide variety of plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet, and it's right here just off our coast.

#SeaToSource will support existing projects and initiatives and launch new actions on the ocean litter issues that matter to you and your community. We know that beach clean-ups are important actions to remove existing ocean litter, but this program is about thinking from the sea right back to the source of litter, encouraging us all to find ways to make beach clean-ups a thing of the past. It starts with each of us, and our relationship to our waterways and oceans, but together we'll also head upstream, running design and innovation challenges to support you and your community to find ways to stop litter at its source.

8 Rivers

Part of the #SeaToSource project, 8 Rivers profiles 8 urban waterways in Australia, sharing information about their importance to the local environment and threats the rivers are facing from plastic litter.

Plastic is around 60-95% of the litter in our waterways and oceans and causes a wide range of issues in these environments. A significant source of litter is urban footpaths and parks, which are drained by storm water systems that flow into rivers and creeks. By cleaning up litter before it enters rivers and oceans, we can all be a part of improving the health of our environment.

We’re inviting everyone who cares about tackling plastic litter to get on board and share your stories about the impacts of litter on your local rivers and waterways, and how you are able to make a difference. Just follow a few simple steps to join the Campfire site and get posting!
